THE INCREASED NEED OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Read time: 2 minutes

The on-going pandemic has made us a realize that we don’t need an excuse to take care of ourselves, yet we always learn when are faced with times of adversity & conflict. Covid-19 has made us realize the importance of mental health care & the urgency of it. People still find it difficult to accept that they can have mental health problems or that mental health problems do exist.

When we talk about mental health issues, we do so to help create a conversation that can help people seek treatment. But that conversation can be mistaken by others as ‘see, happens to everybody’. But my point is that if we are going through the same, what are we doing about it, are we encouraging ourselves & others to seek treatment? Or are we normalizing the pain & suffering as something that is okay to live your life with?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. Many of us are facing challenges are stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions to surge in us. Public health actions, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but they can make us feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety. Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care about, and those around you become more resilient.

We deserve to take care of ourselves when our mind & body feels overwhelmed.

1. Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media can be helpful. It’s good to be informed but hearing about the pandemic constantly can be upsetting.

2. Pause, by taking a few deep breaths, stretching, or even going for a walk.

3. Make time to unwind, try to do some other activities you enjoy like reading, cooking, baking, or watching a feel-good movie.

4. Connect with people around you, sit with them, have a nice cuppa tea or coffee. Cherish your memories with them together.

Consult a Mental health professional when you feel unwell. 🙂
